The critical core DBA combines deep command of the database engine with the responsibility of operating systems that admit no downtime. The scarcity stems from that dual demand: knowing Oracle or SQL Server in depth —their optimizer, their PL/SQL, their high availability mechanisms— and at the same time taking on the operational discipline of an environment where a performance degradation or a data loss has immediate consequences.
